AgInnovate runs under its parent programme TechInnovate, a technology innovation and entrepreneurship development initiative at NUI Galway.
AgInnovate is a forum which combines resources to catalyse and lead agtech innovation by:
- - Delivering the next generation of specially trained Fellows and skilled graduates to the agtech marketplace.
- - Identifying new product development opportunities.
- - Providing, developing and proposing commercial opportunities to move an identified agrifood need forward.
- - Provide research opportunities and spin-out companies in collaboration with agrifood experts and partnering companies.
- - Building an agtech innovation ecosystem that can deliver internationally.
AgInnovate aims to provide unparalleled access to Ireland's leading academic researchers, agrifood and tech industry experts, while the activity is underpinned by world-class facilities available through the support network. AgInnovate offers two core programmes of activity: the Fellowship Programme and the Industry Training workshops.
Dr John Breslin is the Programme Director of TechInnovate/AgInnovate. He is a Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering at the National University of Ireland Galway. He is a Funded Investigator at the FutureMilk Centre and the Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing, and is Co-Principal Investigator at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics. He co-created the SIOC framework (Wikipedia article), implemented in hundreds of applications (by Yahoo, Boeing, Vodafone, etc.) on over 25,000 websites. He has written 180 peer-reviewed academic publications (with best paper awards from SEMANTICS, ICEGOV, ESWC, PELS), and co-authored the books "The Social Semantic Web" and "Social Semantic Web Mining". John is co-founder of boards.ie (Ireland's largest social media website; Wikipedia article), adverts.ie (classified ads website), and StreamGlider (real-time streaming newsreader app). He has won two IIA Net Visionary awards. He is an advisor to AYLIEN, BuilderEngine, CrowdGather, and Pocket Anatomy. He is co-founder of Startup Galway and the Galway City Innovation District. He also serves on the boards of WestBIC and the American Council of Exercise.
Dr Paul Flynn is the Programme Manager and Lecturer in TechInnovate/AgInnovate. He graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology with BEng in Civil Engineering in 2001, and worked in the construction industry for almost a decade as a design engineer and project manager. Clients included IBM, Geodis and Mercedes-Benz. In 2006, Paul pivoted and began teaching mathematics at second level, and subsequently graduated from DCU in 2012 with a BA in English and History (first in class). Upon completion of a Professional Diploma in Education at NUI Galway (with first class honours), Paul then went on to complete a PhD in Education in 2016 and undertake the AgInnovate Entrepreneurship Fellowship in 2017, also at NUI Galway. He is interested in the application of learning sciences through design thinking and new learning environments, and was attracted to the immersive nature of the AgInnovate programme, in particular the opportunity to identify and critically analyse potential new products and business opportunities in the agriculture domain. Paul, an experienced triathlete, still enjoys swimming and cycling.
